What does it mean to host a server?

Hosting means you are able to keep one of your games' servers online, which costs administrators money?

Does hosting also cost currency on the website? (this would make sense since there are barely any servers on the Play page.

I'm new and any sorts of answers to a couple of these questions would help.

the reason there are hardly any games online is because hosting requires the user to port forward, which not many people know how to do.
